Lace-edged Camisole

Garter stitch always seems to me to have a lovely ‘old-fashioned’ look, but it also takes longer to knit than stocking stitch – particularly in a fine yarn! So I designed this very simple camisole, which could be worn as an undergarment – perhaps knitted in silk or fine cashmere – or is pretty enough to be seen and worn as a top. I’ve chosen to knit the body in a 3 ply wool and the lace border in a crochet cotton, but the whole garment could be made in one yarn. It is finished with a lace edging around the neck and armholes, sewn together to form the straps. I’ve added a touch of colour with simple cross-stitch embroidery in red cotton – giving it an authentic vintage look.

The original sample was knitted using a fingering wool Swans Island ‘Fingering’ (100% organic merino wool, 530m/580yd – 100g) and size 20 crochet cotton Anchor ‘Freccia size 20’ (100% cotton, 510m/558yd 50g)
